Acupuncture is part of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and has been used for thousands of years. In TCM Yin and Yang is opposite forces of energy (Qi) in our body and to have optimal health this energy needs to be balanced and flow freely; if the energy stagnates or the energy flow is blocked, health problems, pain or disease occur. There are over 2000 acupuncture points connected via pathways in the body – meridian or energy lines.
During a treatment very fine needles are inserted into specific and appropriate acupuncture points – the action of the needles is to manipulate the energy flow in your body and restore balance and health.
Acupuncture is gaining an increasing body of evidence from clinical randomised controlled trials, proving the efficacy of treatments, and is used alongside orthodox medical practice by physiotherapists, osteopaths, dentists, midwives, nurses and GP’s.
Michelle practices Western Medical Acupuncture as taught by the British Medical Acupuncture Society – similar needling techniques and the same meridian lines are used as in TCM. The action of the needling stimulates the central nervous system which releases biochemicals – opioids, endorphins, hormones etc. – which influences and stimulates the body’s self regulating mechanisms leading to self healing.
Acupuncture is a safe, effective and drug free treatment for various conditions, and it is safe for women to use during and after pregnancy.
